Discover Everything You Wanted To Know About Baby Clothes For Your New Arrival

By Michelle Quiso

Fashions for Infants today and just as snazzy as those for adults, which can overwhelm many new parents when they faced with the job of purchasing clothes. It's important to select clothing that will protect the infant's delicate skin, fit properly, and provide comfort. These useful guidelines discuss everything you wanted to know about baby clothes and will come in handy when shopping.

It can expected that a baby will need his or her clothes changed several times a day, so a large quantity of readily washable, comfortable outfits will be needed. As a rule of thumb, it's most practical to buy clothes in the child's current size. It's only a matter of time before parents will need to stock up on the next size because infants grow rapidly.

The term "layette" refers to the collection of necessities needed to care for an infant. It includes essential clothing items for play, sleeping, outdoors etc., and also other pieces such as bathing and feeding accessories, and bedding, but the focus here will be on clothing, in particular. All items should provide comfort, and be easy to use and care.

"Onesies" are one-piece underwear suits with loose sleeves that have snaps at the bottom to make diaper changing easier. They are something parents should have plenty of since they are great for putting on under the infant's clothing or wearing alone when it's warm outside. Pull-over t-shirts are another item to stock up on, and can pair with anything. Several sleepers with feet in them and long sleeves are the most suitable infant sleepwear, as they prevent heat loss.

A baby's feet and head should be kept covered when it's colder, so it's necessary to have a few caps and pairs of booties. Knit caps with no irritating side seam and booties with Velcro fasteners and ankle elastics that are not too tight are the most suitable. When teething starts, babies tend to drool, so a few teething bibs will be needed, as well some larger-sized feeding bibs when the child starts eating solid food.

Other common outfits a child is likely to need in his or her first year include rompers, which are one-piece garments that consist of attached shorts and shirt and snaps at the crotch. An "overall" is a version of this only with long sleeves and covered legs that can wear when it is colder. "Shortalls" have long legs but short sleeves and are suitable for any weather.

When it's winter, babies should be attired in three layers. The first layer needs to be loose-fitting, comfortable, but non-absorbent. While the second serves to trap air and soak up any sweat, for instance, wool or fleece. And the third must protect from the elements, be wind and water-resistant, materials such as polyester or nylon are best. Layers can easily removed, or zippers undid to prevent overheating.

Baby clothes are sized according to age or weight and height groups. The size range considered "infants" ranges from newborn to 24 months or 5-29 pounds and 10-36 inches in height. Most often it's advisable to buy a size larger than what the child is since they usually run small and may not fit for long.
