Your 3D Ultrasound Ohio Options

By Jocelyn Davidson

You have the opportunity to get your sonogram in a variety of ways. A sonographer gives you the option of having a 3d ultrasound Ohio done, which is a three dimensional picture of your unborn child when you go in to have your checkups. The steps taken at all offices may vary, but the results are generally the same regardless of the professional completing your session.

The average time frame that doctors suggest having this done is between your seventh and eighth month of pregnancy. It allows the parents to see details normally unable to be seen on a two dimensional ultrasound. This third dimension allows for seeing length, girth and even depth perception that many others are not able to see on a first visit.

This can be requested as early as your fifth month but would not have as good a result when it comes to details. The growth your baby goes through is critical to what you will see, so monitoring growth in this way is good but may not offer you ideal results this early. Other ways to keep track of his or her growth would include abdominal measurements, to see that there is enough fluid and there are no abnormalities in size.

The session starts with you baring the entire stomach area so the doctor can put a bit of clear gel onto your abdomen. It's a water based product so you will not have a stain if it gets on your clothes. The wand, which is also called a transducer, is put on top of the gel so the sound waves that get sent into the amniotic fluid are able to be seen clearly as an image reflecting off your child.

The transducer is then moved to different areas to get a full view of the body. There are different methods for this, including trans-vaginal, perineum and surface planing. This means that any of the three could be used to get a full view of the child. It is not required to use more than one type to get your imaging.

Many doctors will ask that you drink more than normal water starting about seven days before you come in for your appointment, to make the amniotic fluid clear for a good view. The trans-vaginal offers the wand being placed into the vagina to get images, and perineum views are obtained with another probe being pushed against the perineum. All three including the surface abdominal planing offers a complete picture of what is going on inside with your baby.

You could use just one and have an ideal image. When you are done, the screen will show you a perfect picture of what your baby looks like including the facial features, toes, fingers and possibly the sex.

Some insurance coverages do not offer this as an option since they can be seen as a keepsake. It can still be an option, but you would need to determine if other payment would be required. Ask your insurance company about this to be certain. For details on your radiology options, talk to your doctor.
