How To Create An Emergency Preparedness Plan That Includes Heating And Lighting

By Eric Holm

Having an effective emergency preparedness plan in place can mean the difference between life and death in the event of a disaster. It is important to know what to do if the house loses power during the winter and it is no longer possible to keep the home warm. Anyone stuck in a broken down car in the middle of winter is at risk of developing painful frostbite or life threatening hypothermia if there is no way to get warm.

One thing everyone should do is purchase a quantity of solar blankets. Store a few blankets in the house and a few in your automobile. This way you will be ready no matter what happens.

If your home heating goes out and is not likely to be repaired within a few hours, you will want to take into consideration not only the ambient temperature but the age and health of your family members. One of the most efficient ways of heating in an emergency situation is through the use of solar blankets and/or solar sleeping bags. Solar blankets are perfect for holding in body heat and are handy in many situations. Not only can a solar blanket keep you warm in a pinch, but if you are stranded in your car on a hot day you can use the solar blanket to deflect the sun and keep your car cooler by putting it in the windows that the sun is directly hitting. In cases of extreme cold, a solar blanket can keep you warm by storing your own body temperature. Just wrap yourself up in the silver blanket and let it's nearly magical properties keep you warm and toasty.

Portable water heaters are also handy to have around in the event of a disaster. These units use propane to heat the water and can be attached directly to any ordinary garden hose. It takes just a few minutes to get hot water. A rechargeable battery is used to power the pump. Make sure the batteries are always charged to full capacity so the unit will be ready any time you need it.

There are many other items that can help in the event you lose heat to your home or automobile. Hand warming packs work similar to the ice packs typically found in a first aid kit. Once the material inside the package is activated, it will provide warmth for several hours. Anytime power is lost you will also lose the ability to use electric powered lights. Always have several flashlights and plenty of batteries around. Candles will provide enough light but they are dangerous and can never be left unattended. Battery operated flashlights and candles offer safer options for when the lights go out. It will be worth your time and effort to devise a plan before disaster strikes.
