Tips That Will Help You Be A Great Parent

By Beth Yu

I'm sure the day, your child was brought into the world, was the most incredible day you've lived! The bond between you and your child is profoundly influential. Use the following tips to maintain the strength of that connection, so that you have a good relationship with him or her well into his or her adult years.

It might be hard to get a preschooler to deal with change. Abruptly switching activities can lead to meltdowns for young kids who need time to transition between tasks.

Although difficult, it is important for parents of college-bound students not to exert pressure on their child to attend a particular school. When teenagers feel pressured and controlled, they will often rebel and do the opposite of what they are supposed to.

While your kids need your time too, you still need "you" time. This helps you to maintain your strength as an individual, which will make you a better parent. Infants and toddlers should not consume soda, diet or otherwise. Stick with drinks that provide your child nutrients like water, juice or milk.

When your child is having difficulty cutting teeth, try placing sour pickles, cucumbers or carrots in a mesh teether. There are many items your child could chew on like a teething ring, but a tasty thing is much more likely to be gnawed upon. The more your child chews on the item, the quicker they will cut their teeth and ultimately feel better.

Make sure you make some stops when traveling with children, so they do not become intolerable. You will have a far more pleasant trip if you take your time, with frequent breaks to relieve the tedium for everyone. Stop at parks, restaurants with play areas, or open grassy areas to let your children run off excess energy during the trip.

If you are traveling with youngsters, make sure you bring along some familiar items for them. Vacations are meant to fun and relaxing, but children can feel uprooted, and their routines feel disrupted. Having your child's favorite blanket or toy will let them have some familiarity in the new setting and make them more comfortable.

It is only realistic to accept that your stepchild will need some time before they feel close enough to you to accept you as a friend and family member. Many kids are resentful that their parents are not together. Take the time to get to know your stepchild and build this link progressively. Do not try to replace one of the parents.

It will be helpful for new stepparents to understand that it will probably be quite a while before your stepchild accepts you into the family. Children may be resentful of their parents' broken marriage. By not trying to rush things, the process is smoother. Over time, the child will get to know you and learn to accept the situation.

Next time, you have to deal with airport security and you, have your kids in tow, have a look to see if there is a family security line available. These days, most airlines offer them. Take your time and do not try to deal with people that are impatient. You will have to run everything you have through the X-rays, along with car seats and kids' shoes.

If you are an adoptive parent, be prepared to answer questions when your child is old enough to know they are adopted. Most adopted children want to know where it is they came from at one point or another, so make sure you are someone they can turn to. Tell the truth in regards to their biological parents, because if it is discovered that you were not forthright, they may feel resentment.

You can reinforce healthy eating habits by eliminating high-calorie snacks and junk food from your home. Your kids will most likely not want unhealthy treats, like candies, cookies, and chips if you don't have them in the house. These items should be kept as special occasion gifts, such as for Christmas or Halloween.

Good parenting involves giving children positive feedback when they are good. Children ordinarily crave attention. If they are not appropriately praised for good behavior, they may seek out attention by behaving badly instead. It is easy only to notice the bad things a child does when you are a parent. It is a mistake only to pay attention to those things, however. Reward your child when they do well.

Lavender oil can help calm a crying baby. Try rubbing a small amount on your neck and then cradling your baby close enough to smell it. The smell of the oils will have a soothing effect on the baby. Lavender oil is extremely calming and also works for getting children to take naps.

Wait until you have control of your emotions rather than trying to deal with your child when you are angry. Anger should be kept in check when attempting to discipline your child. Letting anger control reactions to a situation can send a message that lashing out is an acceptable way to handle things and can damage self-esteem as well. Getting angry about accidents or honest mistakes, is a particularly poor parenting practice.

Do not give to your child's every whim. Sometimes it can be beneficial to give them a little bit of freedom to having what they want. Never try to buy your child's love, or they will not respect your authority.

One great way, to start saving for college early, is by contributing to a tax-deferred 529 educational savings plan. This is a college savings program that is run by the state government. There are also tax benefits that are involved with it.

When helping your child cope with bullying, the best thing, to do, is talk to them, share your experiences, and encourage them to be open and honest with you. It is also important to communicate with your child's school, find out what their bullying policy is and make sure he knows where to go for help during school hours.

If you have a good relationship with your children when they are still little you, will have a better one when they get older. Following these tips is only the first step in your parenting journey.
