By Ines Flores

Teaching your children basic skills and values, such as counting, waiting their turn, teamwork and being a good sport can be done in various ways. Playing fun family card games is merely one of them. Moreover, they are a fabulous way for a family to bond.

The importance of quality time can easily be replaced by the more prevalent factor of television. In many households, that remains the single form of amusement and family time every evening. Fortunately, many people realize the need to replace this form by a more meaningful type of activity. Card games can provide that outlet.

One of the most popular games, also among the simplest, is Pairs or the Memory game. The idea of the game is to keep making pairs, by remembering the cards placed over on a table, and picking ones that will help complete the pairs. Children benefit by sharpening their memories, and also developing values such as patience, and awaiting turns when there are one or more people.

Another game amid this category of popular ones is one called Bluff. A simple game, this one helps sharpen the wits and also proved to be an enjoyable pastime. When played in teams, it builds coordination, and is especially fun as well as useful when family members play together.

A fun card game that teaches strategy and witty thinking to kids at an early age is Rummy. Players are required to form sets of three or four cards within the number they have been dealt. The ability to decide which cards to keep and which to throw back into the deck call for the critical decisions that lead to winning this game.

Old maid is a card game usually taught to young kids for entertainment and together time. Moreover, it helps in their memory and tactical powers as those playing need to make pairs of cards and thus get rid of them. The last one to have any in their hands is the loser.

There are a host of other card games that can be both fun and educational for young children. However, apart from the benefits of each individual kind, the mere act of holding the cards in place is a great learning for young ones. It enables them to learn better gripping capabilities.

Not only are card games fun and important for parents to use as recreation for their kids, but also as entertainment with their own friends. A party can become more meaningful when dancing or movies can be exchanged with a deck of cards.

Card games are also a useful way to keep the young ones engaged with various age groups. Grandparents could be involved and make for a very valuable means of interaction of kids with elders.

If one is planning a holiday, including a pack of cards may be a wise thought to ponder. Imagine a rainy afternoon on the beach of the villa you are vacationing at, and no indoor activity to keep the kids busy. A game of cards at that moment may just do the trick.

Playing cards forms a very traditional and flexible way of keeping the kids and parents well bonded. While you can teach your youngsters a host of values this way, there could possibly be any better way of connecting with the kids from an early age.
